Isn't that the escape capsule system like the one on the B-58? I have heard of plans for it being used on the F4D but not the A4... weird!

Newp Rafale D was right with the shield guess but the clamshell appearance is indeed quite similar to the Stanley B-58 capsule!

this was another of many cold war relics meant to be a response to the era's nuclear threat, specifically the late 1950s. Basically this is a thermal/radiation shield designed to protect the pilot in the event of a nuclear blast, with the added benefit that they did not become blinded by the bright flash. It was meant to be deployed after delivering a nuclear weapon during a bombing mission. US Navy A-4Es were often equipped with these plus Mk.7 gravity bombs when carriers were near critical areas. They were retired in the late 1960s to pave way for more advanced protection methods.

This one was tested on the F-106 in 1962 per Dartboard/Broadjump programme specs... it didnt see service because the pilot's pressure suit and supersonic ejection system affected its usability.

She's right . Not a capsule but a light shield for the close up nuclear delivery- blinding light protection

A 4 Skyhawk was too small for a capsule let alone the Marten Bakers up grade from the Stanley

LGB long beach converted a few A 4 ... minus one that bounced off the ceiling ... oops.

These look cramped as hell and looks like they would affect the operational ergonomics of the plane. I would hate to be the pilot having to deal with the space reduction.
