Mi-8MT "RELAIS II" spy modification

In 1983, the East German Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit (Ministry for State Security, or Stasi) modified a squadron of Mi-8MTs from the 239 OGVP for electronic and photographic reconnaissance missions, codenamed "RELAIS II," to spy on Allied communications installations within the Berlin Control Zone (BCZ), from along the West-Berlin borders.

These aircraft were equipped with special broadband receivers and antennae in place of some of the right-side windows (note that one window to the rear was left intact for still photography), plus the addition of a video camera setup on the left side. They were piloted by Soviet personnel, but the interpreter, photographer, and the two radio operators in the cargo area were East German.

In the event of forced landing within restricted West-Berlin territory, the East German agents were instructed to remain in the aircraft and not to bring any documentation pertaining to the missions, as well as to take notes on paper that would easily dissolve in a container of water that they had on board with them.

These missions stopped around 1989.
