Hoping this will lure Leela25 back to activity, and besides we needed a thread on this aircraft. So here is some info. Discuss, share pics, rant... you know the drill.

 

Name: F-35.
Role: Stealth Multi-role fighter.
Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin. 
Introduction: 2011.
Status: Under development / pre-production.
Unit cost: $80-100 Million.

The F-35 is a fifth-generation, single-seat, single-engine, stealth-capable military strike fighter, a multi-role aircraft that can perform close air support, tactical bombing, and air defense missions. The F-35 has three different models; one is the conventional takeoff and landing variant, the second is short takeoff and vertical-landing variant, and the third is a carrier-based variant.

F-35A - conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant. 
F-35B - short-takeoff and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant. 
F-35C - carrier-based CATOBAR (CV) variant.

The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant intended for the air forces. It is the smallest, lightest F-35 version and is the only variant equipped with an internal cannon, the GAU-22/A. This 25 mm cannon is a development of the GAU-12 carried by the USMC's AV-8B Harrier II. It is designed for increased effectiveness compared to the 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon carried by other USAF fighters.

The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the aircraft. Similar in size to the A variant, the B sacrifices some fuel volume to make room for the vertical flight system. Takeoffs and landing with vertical flight system are by far the riskiest, and in the end, a decisive factor in design. Like the AV-8B Harrier II, the B's guns will be carried in a ventral pod.

The F-35C carrier variant will have a larger, folding wing and larger control surfaces for improved low-speed control, and stronger landing gear for the stresses of carrier landings. The larger wing area allows for decreased landing speed, increased range and payload, with twice the range on internal fuel.

Lockheed Martin announced a new website for the F-35 Lightning II aircraft at the Paris Air Show today.

The F-35 Lightning II is the most advanced 5th generation multirole fighter in the world, combining Very Low Observable stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations and reduced sustainment costs. The Lightning II's sensor suite is the most powerful and comprehensive of any fighter in history and will merge with an unprecedented networking capability to give unmatched situational awareness. Supersonic launch of internal weapons, including maximum-speed (Mach 1.6) launch of internal air-to-air missiles, is a feature of all F-35s. 

Lockheed Martin is developing the F-35 with its principal industrial partners, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. Pratt & Whitney's F135 propulsion system powers all F-35 variants.

decided to wake up an old topic, the first few F-35's bought by australia will be coming in soon cant wait for that, hopefully they'll come in on a monday between 6 and 9 Pm while ime at RAAF Darwin

There has been quite a bit of discussion recently at another forum I'm a member of, as to which is 'better', the F-22 Raptor or F-35 Lightning II?

Although both are classed as fifth-generation fighters, it should be clear to most people that the F-35 is in fact more advanced than the F-22. But there are a lot of F-22 fanboys out there who simply will not have any of it!

But I say, who really cares? They're both made by the same company, in the same country (for the most part regarding the F-35), and they're both on the same side!

in my regards i respect both aircraft equally, but the big advantage the F-35 has over the F-22 is that it can operate from small airfields (STOL), helipads (VTOL) and carriers (CTOL) giving it a better reaction time to world events being able to land on the carriers or land on an unfinished airstrip at a moents notice and sail to their destination where as the F-22 would have to be either fly to a completed airstrip or be transported there.

The problem with a F-22 vs F-35 comparison is that both aircraft are designed for different purposes. The F-22 is by all logic superior to the F-35 for air-to-air combat, as that was the main point to have an advanced platform that is supermaneuverable. It's an air superiority fighter that is able to do some air-to-ground and EW tasks. The F-35 plays sort of a different role. It is a multirole fighter with emphasis on air-to-ground, EW and recon, with air-to-air combat capabilities. They are supposed to compliment each other.

Unfortunately these plans changed since only 187 F-22s were built, so now it looks like the F-35 has been given the spotlight in the event of the F-15C being retired soon.

As a replacement to the F-15 I agree with the F-35 stepping up, but as a successor to the F-22, not so much. Like you said it wasn't designed for air superiority, it was originally meant as a strike platform that could also defend itself in the event of an air-to-air situation. Granted it can outperform most earlier-generation fighters but it still leaves a bit of a gap in American air superiority.

The US and Israel conducted an air exercise on Sunday involving F-35 jets from one another’s air force.

This is the first time Israel Air Force (IAF) F-35I "Adir" jets participated in an exercise alongside USAF F-35s in Israel. In June 2019, the IAF jets took part in drills with USAF and Royal Air Force F-35s; and in November, with Italian F-35s.

The pilots of the two air forces did not meet prior to the joint exercise and only coordinated maneuvers in the air due the coronavirus outbreak.

"Air Force History: For the first time, IAF 'Adir' (F-35I) aircraft trained alongside US Air Force F-35s from 388th Fighter Wing in Israel," the IAF said in a statement Monday.

"The 'Enduring Lightning' exercise in southern Israel - joint training between Israeli 'Adir' F35I aircraft from the IAF's 140 squadron (Golden Eagle), alongside F-35 aircraft operated by the USAF's 34th Fighter Squadron, came to an end yesterday. The IAF's 122 squadron (Nahshon), which operates the Gulfstream G-500 aircraft, also participated in the exercise during which the teams faced various aerial and ground threats in advanced 5th generation aircraft," the IAF said.

The Israel Defense Force (IDF) noted that the drills were planned in advance as a part of the 2020 exercise schedule, but were adapted to fit the new reality of the quarantine caused by the global coronavirus pandemic. Participants in the drill never met in person and the entire exercise was carried out in the air, to safeguard service personnel's health and well-being.

The two countries held a joint aerial exercise between March 24 -26. Another drill, Juniper Cobra 20, scheduled for March, was shelved as "a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of all participants".

Even as a strike platform the F-35B and C variants fall short for their inability to achieve supersonic flight at higher altitudes, limited to short bursts at about Mach 1. Heat buildup on the surface can damage antennas and degrade the LO coating. That is a pretty serious deficiency, but there are no plans to fix it as of the date of this posting.

F-35C takes a bit of pushing to get to 1.6 anyway because of the wingspan but i agree its a major hindrance. Superior situational awareness is great but with speed and maneuverability hindered you aren't left with many options in a combat situation...
