I find it amusing that this new Chinese stealth fighter shows they got all their ideas from the American F-22 and F-35 fighter programs. Can you see the similarities? They copy everything. no

Chinese stealth fighter makes first test flight

A leading expert on the Chinese military says the country's prototype stealth fighter has made its first-known test flight.

Kanwa Asian Defense magazine editor Andrei Chang said the J-20 flew for about 15 minutes over an airfield in the southwestern city of Chengdu where it was spotted carrying out runway tests last week. Photos of the plane in flight were also posted on unofficial Chinese military websites.

The test flight comes on the second day of a visit to China by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Chang and other analysts say the test's timing is apparently intended to send the message that Beijing is responding to calls from the U.S. and others to be more transparent about its defense modernization and future intentions.

It has been reported that the J-20's official name is "Black Eagle", NATO reporting name "Firefang".

Gentlemen, photoshop is grand.smile
The weapon bay in the photograph is from the F22, and I think because China's machine is larger so would the weapon bays.

Not really, the F22 uses 20-year-old technology. I'm sure the Chinese are way ahead in the J20's technology compared to western air superiority aircraft.

What about the F-35 JSF? It has more powerful stealth capability than the F22...

For once I think you made a wise comparison. I'm sure the J-20 is way ahead on active stealth, but internal weapon bays suggest the fighter doubles for air-to-ground combat like the Joint Strike Fighter.

Maneuverability should be about the same too. Does the J-20 have thrust-vectoring?

Gunship, yes, see my earlier post:

From what I learned online the J-20 is powered by two Russian NPO Saturn 117S afterburning turbofan engines with 3d vectoring nozzles. These are engines that are also used in the Sukhoi T-50 & Su-35S fighters.

Beautiful machine! My latest favorite next to the Su-37 and F-22 fighters!

According to the Russian military news network on April 14 reported that online media revealed that in March this year, rumors that China is developing single light F -20 fighter, the same as the U.S. F-35, mainly for export. The stealth fighter weapons bay built, cost is not expensive, inexpensive, many countries have the ability to buy.

Russian media said the F -20 to existing layout and structure, if the assembly of 4 engines, and can become the basis for stealth bombers, F -20 to realize the three types of aircraft based on the structure, power plant, etc. a high degree of universal integration. There are also rumors, JF-17 "Fierce Dragon" light fighter models are being developed to improve the depth, the main task is to significantly reduce the effective scattering area. Although it can not be the same in the performance of F-35 competition, but drastically reduced the level of the aircraft after the radar and infrared radiation, can significantly improve performance and combat aircraft survivability. Scorpio, apparently the J-20 is a substantial equivelant of the F-35, so I wouldn't see the point.

I have to correct. The J-20 has a larger airframe than the F-35JSF and is heavier. The J-20 supposedly has a larger weapon capacity as well with internal weapon bays. Information is scarce as this time.

A single-engine variant would be unwise with such a large airframe. It would have to be completely redesigned for this configuration which also means cutting back on space for the internal stores.

Good point, they would have to compltely re-design the Airframe to fit a single engine, shich would have to be bigger to have the same qualities as the J-20

A close look at China's J-20 stealth fighter, by Washington think tank The Jamestown Foundation, calls the plane a "game changer," that will render all air defense in the region obsolete.

With no refueling of the J-20, Japan, South Korea, and former Air Force bases in the Philippines will all be open to attack; with refueling, United States operations in Guam become easily acquired targets.

This capability allows China to take full control of both "island chains" that form the country's self-defined, maritime defense perimeter.

The study suggests that J-20s will be the tactical equal of U.S. F-22A Raptors as well as F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, and be capable of delivering large "glide bombs" that will "remain unseen through the whole delivery maneuver, effecting complete surprise."

With no radar arrays capable of picking up a stealth fighter, the J-20 will be undetectable to all air defense systems in the U.S., and on all its allied bases in the Asia-Pacific region.

U.S. options for dealing with the J-20 in the air are limited to the 158-plane, F-22 fleet that has been grounded since May 3 due to faulty oxygen systems that cause pilots to lose consciousness at high altitude.

There is currently no allocation in the defense budget to develop "counter stealth" radars in the U.S.

Hi Air_Gopher, the J-20 can not properly fill the requirements as an air-superiority fighter since it is a strike fighter much like the F-35. You would need a slightly smaller airframe with a lighter payload as the F-22 and proper engines for high-speed flight performance.
